My Best Employee Is My Website

Now that is a different way of looking at your website. I have never thought of a website in that way. Even so there is truth in that thought. I was talking with a colleague of mine when he made this statement. I was baffled to say the least. How could your website be your best employee? He explained to me that his website works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It never asks for a day off, gets sick or takes a vacation. Also he said my website fills several positions, such as my receptionist, customer service representative, sales person, and promoter. Of course I was intrigued, so let me explain his reasoning.
As a receptionist the website greets all customers with a happy welcome and is always in a good mood. Then it guides them to the department or information they need without hesitation. Gathering information about the customer to fulfill future needs is another task the website performs. It can even remember the customer's name, location and preferences. That brings to mind the character "Norm" from the popular TV Sitcom "Cheers". Everyone knows his name so he always feels welcome.
The website is also a customer service representative. It explains warranties and privacy policies. Records customer inquiries or concerns and routes the information to the appropriate person. The website provides customers with useful tips that help them in their business or personal life.
The diligent website as a salesperson provides customers with information about services and products no matter what time of day or night. It can complete sales transactions that normally accounts for 15% or more of a company's overall sales. Keeping the customer Informed about specials and discounts is another sales task the website performs. Best of all it services customers on both a local and global market.
Last but not least, the website promotes the company. It keeps customers informed about other satisfied customers. The website also tells customers about activities the company is involved in.
In conclusion the website is the best employee because of all the jobs it does and for a fraction of the cost of more traditional employees. But keep in mind that as with any employee, it must have the skills and knowledge to perform its tasks well. A bad design equals a bad employee. On that note I must agree with my colleague, my best employee is my website.
